Description
Cobdens is a house, originally the parish workhouse, dating back to the 15th century, with significant alterations in the 17th, early 19th, and 20th centuries. It is built of mixed materials, including tile roofing. The main front (east side) is a two-storey building with an attic, featuring four windows, and a single-storeyed south wing with one window. The roof is ½-hipped, incorporating two high, flat-roofed dormers, brick dentil eaves on the north side, and a lower hipped section connecting to the south wing. The original building is a late-medieval timber-framed house, with a 17th-century timber-framed rear wing and an early 19th-century northward extension, alongside minor 20th-century additions to the south and rear. The front elevation has varying casement windows. The ground floor exhibits exposed timber framing, with the upper walls tile-hung on the north side, which is brickwork in Monk bond above a lower walling of malmstone (with brick dressings); the south wing is brickwork in Flemish Garden Wall bond. The rear wing displays exposed timber framing on its north side, where the upper walls are tile-hung. Projections and alterations have been made to convert the building into several units, originally intended as cottages.
