Description

Wheatley End Cottage is a cottage, originally two dwellings, dating to the 16th century, with significant alterations in the 17th and late 18th centuries and 20th-century restoration. It is constructed of brick and stone, with a thatched roof. The original structure was a timber frame of two bays, with a massive chimney attached at each end, and a first floor inserted. The cottage was later extended at each end in timber frame, modified to form two dwellings with a doorway at each end, and has been returned to a single residence. The south elevation is symmetrical, with four windows above six. It has a hipped roof with eyebrows to two-and-a-half dormers and a catslide at the rear. The upper walls are tile-hung, while the ground floor is now clad in brickwork of Flemish bond with a plinth. Casement windows are present, with one of the paired middle windows lowered to create a French window. At each end, the upper walls are tile-hung, and the lower walls have exposed timber framework with painted brick infill. One end features a malmstone outshot with casement windows and boarded doors within plain frames. The rear (north) elevation, facing the lower roadway, has two windows, with upper walls of brickwork in Flemish bond and the lower walls of malmstone with brick dressings, including quoins and vertical sections. The interior reveals the original structure, including a dog-leg stair beside the chimney breast. The upper floor has two rooms to each side, separated by a timber-framed cross-wall.
