Description

The Dower House is a house that dates from the 18th century, with early 19th-century and circa 1900 alterations. It features rendered walls and a half-timbered jettied first floor supported by side brackets. The steep tile roof is gable tile-hung and decorated with scalloped bands. The building has several phases, starting as a small L-shaped house in the 18th century, which was expanded in the early 19th century with a larger block that is at right angles to the roadway, along with extensions and alterations in the Arts and Crafts style.

The south front was originally symmetrical, consisting of two storeys and three windows, but the west side now has a jettied gable. It includes two early 19th-century upper sash windows, while the other windows are mullioned and transomed casements, including a rectangular bay window beneath the jetty. There is a Tuscan open porch made of stone, featuring two columns with simplified mouldings, a reeded doorframe, a fanlight, and a six-panelled door. The west elevation, facing the street, showcases the oldest part of the house, with painted brickwork and casement windows. The south side has a gable and two sash windows. Substantial extensions have been added, filling in the earlier L-shape, featuring tile-hung gables, painted brick walls, casement windows, and traditional doors.
