Description

Denmead Cottage is a cottage with extensions, dating back to the 16th century, with further work in the early 17th and 20th centuries. The external structure combines exposed timber framing with brick infill, and the west gable is tile-hung above a brick wall. The roof is thatched, closely fitted around gabled dormers. The cottage began as a 2-bay timber-framed hall, built in the late medieval period. It features large chimneys – one attached to the east and another inserted within the west end – as well as an upper floor. A timber-framed extension of one bay was added in the late 16th or early 17th century, extending westward. A larger eastward extension, built in the 20th century and replicating earlier styles, was later added. The north front has a single storey and attic, with 3 windows above 5. It contains casement windows and a small porch with a lowered roof line. A plain door is visible. The different phases of construction are discernible in the building's appearance.
