Description
No. 39 Cliffe High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates back to the 16th century, with an early 19th-century front. The building is timber-framed and has a stuccoed front, featuring a parapet that conceals the roof. It stands three storeys tall and has a regular two-window front, with glazing bar sashes; the sashes on the second floor are shallower than those on the lower floors. The jetty over the ground floor is now supported by four cast-iron columns. The late 19th-century double shopfront includes central half-glazed doors. The interior has only been partially inspected, but it features a heavy scantling timber frame with a post and joist ceiling, and a visible dragon-beam. There is a timber-framed wing at the rear with exposed framing and plaster infill, which is tile-hung under a half-hipped gable. The building has irregular fenestration and a lean-to structure against the ground floor.
