Description
No. 40 Cliffe High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the 16th century or early 17th century, with a front block added in the early to mid-19th century. The front is made of brick and features a stuccoed band above the first floor, along with a dentilled wooden cornice at the parapet that conceals the roof. The building has three storeys and a single window front, with glazing bar sashes; the window on the second floor is shallower than the one on the first floor. The ground floor has a 20th-century single shopfront with an inset glazed door to the left. At the rear, there is a wing with channelled stucco on the right return front and on the ground floor at the back, topped with weather-board. The gable has a splay-back to the right. The structure is timber-framed and features a jetty over the ground floor, with two storeys and irregular single window fenestration.
