Description
The Old Forge is a house that later served various industrial purposes and by 1872 was the site of a furniture maker, paper hanger, undertaker, appraiser, and house agent. It is now a shop. The building dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and has been altered in the 18th or 19th century, with restoration in the 20th century. It features a timber frame with a red and blue brick ground floor, which is painted on the south side. The first floor is weather-boarded on the north and east sides, with an exposed frame and rendered infill on the south. The roof is plain tiled. The first floor has full-length sliding sash windows with upright glazing bars on the east side, while the fenestration is irregular elsewhere. The entrance is located in a two-storey painted brick wing to the south. Inside, the timber frame is exposed, showcasing a chamfered ground floor bearer and a two-bay frame. The roof features an exposed queen post with a cambered tie.
