Description

Forbes Almhouses are a group of almshouses built in 1852. They feature walls made of knapped flints with Bath stone dressings, including a plinth, quoins, a first-floor band, and moulded mullion and transom windows set within plain frames. The gables have moulded cornices and pediments supported by brackets, topped with ball finials on the half-dormers and upper parts of the chimney stacks. The roof is tiled.

The terrace consists of four units, with one unit projecting forward at the north end. The front elevation faces east and has gables on each side, with a total of one and a half storeys and a window arrangement of 1.2.1. The windows are casements. There are stone classical doorcases, with two coupled doorways at Nos 1 and 2, and single doorways at Nos 3 and 4, all featuring pediments and simple pilasters, with plain openings and 20th-century panelled doors.

The north elevation, which includes the doorway at No 1, has two windows spaced wider on the west side. The south elevation has one window and a single doorway at No 5 on the east side. The rear elevation for Nos 1, 3, 4, and 5 is symmetrical but simpler, with gables on each side and a window arrangement of 1.2.1. There is also a continuous service block along the west side of the rear yard. The coupled doorways have a shield within the pediment and an inscription above Nos 3 and 4.
