Description
The war memorial in East Meon was built in 1921 and designed by Sir John Ninian Comper, with the stonework executed by mason Andrew Perryman. It features a tall chamfered shaft topped with a projecting moulded cap and a bevelled cross. The cap is adorned with a shield motif, and the crosshead displays a scroll on one side. The shaft stands on a plinth above a base, with the plinth inscribed with 'In memory of the men of East Meon who fell in the Great War 1914-1919', along with the names of the fallen. Additionally, there is a bronze plaque shaped like an open book, which commemorates those who fell in World War II with the inscription '1939-1945' and a list of names.
The memorial was unveiled by General J S Nicholson MP and dedicated by the Bishop of Lewes in 1921, with the bronze plaque added after World War II. This memorial holds significant historical and cultural value both locally and nationally, being an elegant example designed by a prominent ecclesiastical architect and having group value with several nearby listed buildings.
