Description

Monger House is a mid-19th century group of almshouses designed in a picturesque style with Gothic elements. The building has two storeys and features a total of nine windows. It is constructed from stock brick, with a stone cornice and a stone-coped parapet. The first floor has stone quoins, above which are octagonal, stone-dressed chimney turrets. The central bay projects slightly and is topped with a shaped, stone-coped gable, complete with quoins and kneelers.

On the first floor, there is a canted oriel window at the center, which has a battlemented parapet and decorative glazing. Above this window is a plaque with an illegible inscription. The windows are one-bar casements, either single or paired, set in alternating block chamfered stone surrounds. In the second and eighth bays, there are double doors with two long panels, each topped with square hoodmoulds. A similar central door features a four-centred head.

Monger House, along with Nos 1 to 6 (consecutive) and the East Wall, forms a cohesive group.
