Description

This is a house dating to around 1830, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is built of yellow brick, with white brick additions, and has a slate roof. The house is two storeys and an attic, with a two-by-two bay layout and an H-shaped roof. A mid-19th century single-storey porch has been added to the front entrance, and a single-storey kitchen to the rear.

The garden front features two gables. A single-storey bay was added in the mid-19th century in front of the left gable, featuring an ornate stone balustrade on the first floor. Originally, a cast iron-framed lead tented roof covered the entire front, but this was altered to surround the bay window. The right gable has a large 12-pane sash window with small edge panes and louvred shutters. On the first floor are two-light casement windows with small edge panes, rubbed brick heads, and hood mouldings within the gables, with a single casement window between. The gables themselves contain two-light casements. The overhanging roof is supported by large timber brackets at each end, which meet at a valley gutter. The eaves are boxed and eaves-coved on the sides. The chimneys have unusual mid-19th century ornate terracotta pots and are situated at the junction with the cross roof.

The interior is complete in 19th-century style, exhibiting two distinct periods. The two main rooms on the garden front have double doors between them, along with moulded cornices, door surrounds, wainscots, and marble fireplaces. Behind these rooms is a small library with similar details, and a large stairhall containing a rounded dog-leg staircase. This stairhall has a large round-headed window, moulded cornices, door frames, and wainscots on both the hall and landing. A further ground floor room comprises a butler’s pantry and a servants’ staircase.
