Description
The Red House is a farmhouse that dates from the 17th century, with early and late 19th-century and 20th-century alterations. The building features walls made of red brick in English, Monk, and Stretcher bonds, along with a small section of malmstone with brick dressings and a small area of exposed timber framing. The first floor has tile-hanging on part of it and on two walls. The roof is primarily tiled, with a half-hip and a rear catslide, while the cross-wing has a low-pitched hipped slate roof.
The house has a three-bay timber frame and is two storeys high, with an early 19th-century cross-wing that is three storeys tall. The south elevation of the cross-wing was originally symmetrical with three windows, but now features a full-height angular bay of three bays on the west side, constructed of red brick, while the rest of the elevation is tile-hung. The windows are sash types, and there is a glazed projection in the middle and east side that contains an entrance within a porch and a French door leading to a living room.
On the west elevation, the older part of the house is visible, which is two storeys high with three windows. The first floor is tile-hung above 17th-century brickwork, with casement windows. A former brick porch has been converted into a window and is enclosed within a larger part-open 20th-century porch that serves as the main entrance. There is also a small single-storey extension at the north end, made of brick and tile.
