Description

The Church of St Andrew is a parish church with medieval origins that was rebuilt in 1772 and again in the late 19th century. It features a rendered flint exterior with stone and brick dressings, topped by an old plain tile roof. The church is a single-storey structure with an 18th-century south aisle, a 19th-century north porch, and a west belfry. The chancel includes a 19th-century three-light perpendicular window and an 18th-century lancet. The north and south walls date from the 18th century. The nave has single lancets on the north side, flanking a gabled timber porch from the 19th century that is open at the front. The south aisle contains four single lancets with brick dressings. The west end features a pair of tall lancets and short medieval stone buttresses at the corners. The 19th-century timber belfry has a pair of openings on each side and a tall shingled hipped roof, housing two bells dated 1772. Inside, only the tie beams of the barrel-vaulted roof are visible as it is now boarded. The church has early 18th-century oak altar rails and several monuments: on the south wall, a memorial to Elizabeth Ridge from 1731; on the north wall, memorials to Captain William Ridge from 1772, Thomas Ridge from 1801, and Charles and Mary Graeme from 1833 and 1923. The furnishings date from the late 19th century.
