Description

The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a parish church located in West Tisted. It dates from the 11th century, with additions and alterations made in the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, as well as in 1750 and 1848. The church features flint walls and a tiled roof. Originally a single-cell early Norman church, it was extended eastwards in 1848 to create a new chancel and a small north vestry. The south porch, built in 1750, and a western bell turret made of timber are notable features. The bell turret has a plain tile roof with a pyramid shape and boarded sides.

The church's walls are constructed of flint with stone dressings, which suggest a small westward extension. It includes a 14th-century west window with two cusped lights below a quatrefoil, a filled Norman door on the north side, a 13th-century cusped lancet, and a small filled early Norman window located west of the south porch. East of the porch, there is a coupled perpendicular window. The Victorian chancel, designed in a similar style, has two coupled lights on the south side and a three-light perpendicular window on the east.

The south porch is made of brickwork, featuring a gable and a cambered arch, with a plaque that reads 'The Gift of Magdalen College 1750'. Inside the porch, there is a plain Gothic doorway from the 13th century with a stoop in the jamb.

The interior of the church is plain, containing a 15th-century piscina with a trefoil arch and a credence (now located in the nave), a simple circular font, a Jacobean altar table, a panelled sanctuary, cambered tie-beams (some with king posts), and a brass chandelier. There are also some modest wall monuments from the late 17th and 18th centuries.
