Description
Soames Place is a house that dates from the 15th century, with additions and alterations from the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. The walls feature massive exposed framing, showcasing various construction phases. Part of the lower wall has close studding with flint infill, while other sections have brick infill. The lower wall at the north end is made of flint work with brick dressings, and the west end includes a section of ashlar chalkstone with brick dressings. The roof is thatched, hipped at the east end and half-hipped at the west, with a catslide above a 20th-century rear outshot, and features a shafted stack. The house originally had a medieval timber-framed hall, with extensions from the 16th and 17th centuries, which include inserted late Tudor fireplaces and a first floor in part. The west end was reclad and extended in the 18th century. The north front has two storeys with irregular fenestration, featuring casements, two old openings with diagonal oak mullions, and an oriel window with five lights supported by three brackets. There is a 20th-century half-timbered porch with a gabled tile roof. Inside, the framework is exposed, and there are two Tudor fireplaces with chamfered bressumers.
