Description
This building began as an inn, later divided into two houses. It has a 17th-century core, which was refronted in the 18th century, with 19th-century additions and alterations. The structure has a timber-frame core, now faced with brick, colourwashed surfaces, and rendered brick. A single-storey, three-bay extension from the 19th century adjoins the right side. The main part of the building is two storeys and five bays. A six-panel door is set within a segmental head, topped by a flat hood, on the left end. To the left of the door is a 20th-century three-light casement window beneath an older segmental head; above it is a tall 19th-century two-light camber-headed casement. The building has dentilled eaves. The centre bay features a six-panel door under a flat hood, and the right bays contain two 12-pane segmental-headed sash windows, with a segmental-headed casement between them and a signboard above. Above the door is a small 12-pane sash window, and two larger similar sashes are in the other bays. A wrought iron bracket supports an inn sign at the right end. The roof includes a gabled two-light dormer between the right bays, a right-end stack, and a ridge stack between the left bays. The 19th-century extension has tall, two-light windows within moulded architraves on each side of a slightly projecting centre bay. This bay has a tiled roof and a 20th-century two-light casement. The extension’s roof is slated. Previously known as The Volunteer Inn.
