Description
The George Hotel is a public house dating from the 18th century, located on the south side of East Street in Hambledon. The building features walls made of painted brickwork in header bond, with some sections in Monk-bond and tile-hanging at the rear. It has a tile roof with three hipped dormers and plaster coved eaves. The symmetrical north front is two storeys high with an attic and includes three windows. The windows are sashes in exposed frames, with Victorian sashes on the ground floor. The central doorway is plain and has a 6-panelled door, with the top two panels being glazed, all beneath a wide canopy supported by brackets. A large wrought-iron bracket projects from the eaves level, featuring side and lower braces with decorative crosspieces. The horizontal bar of the bracket holds a boarded inn sign, which is adorned with a curved decorative loop that once held a bunch of grapes. At the rear, there are three wings, with the south western wing extended to serve as a stable block, featuring upper hayloft doors and a central carriage entrance leading to the rear yard.
