Description

The Old Coach House and The Old Stables is a stable block dating from the mid to late 18th century, which was converted into dwellings in the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of brick with rubbed brick and stone dressings, topped by an old plain tile roof with lead roofs on the pediments. It forms a quadrangle with stable blocks around it, originally featuring archways on the northeast and southeast sides.

The southeast side, which faces the house, was enhanced in the late 18th century and is symmetrical with nine bays, standing at one and a half stories on a plinth. There are four bays on each side of a wider and taller entrance bay, which is now filled in. Pilasters are positioned between the bays and at the corners, supporting a cornice above. Each bay features rubbed brick arches with key blocks, with the central pilasters and arch being taller. Each bay contains a 12-pane sash window with a rubbed brick head, while the central bay has a bulls-eye window in a rubbed brick surround, below a 20th-century tall 18-pane stair light with a balcony. A moulded timber cornice runs along either side of the central bay. The end bays and the central bay have pediments with moulded timber architraves, while the other bays are topped with two-light rounded lead-roofed dormers. The roof is hipped, with small 20th-century stacks positioned in front of the ridge. The southeast range of the courtyard is similar but has received a 20th-century Adam treatment, while the other ranges feature carriage and stable doors.
