Description

Covers is a mid-16th century four-bay timber-framed house featuring a central smoke bay. The rear outshut has been built up, and the house was extended to the northwest in the 20th century. The original front elevation faces southwest, with the ground floor constructed of Hythe sandstone and red brick dressings around the windows. The upper floor is finished with tile hanging, and the roof is a plain tile hipped design with a large red brick stack on the right side. The windows are casements with leaded panes, and the ground floor windows have cambered heads.

Inside, the timber-framed walling is exposed on both the first and ground floors, showcasing stopped and chamfered beams. There are two backing hearths in the small central bay, each containing bread ovens and a small square recess at the back of the fireplace. One side of the southeast hearth is built from large pieces of dressed stone with a chamfered edge, believed to have been sourced from the nearby former Shulbrede Priory. The roof features clasped purlins with windbraces, and there is heavy sooting on the inner sides of the small central smoke bay.
