Description

The Parish Church of St Peter is a medieval parish church that has undergone significant restoration and rebuilding. The church features a three-bay nave, likely from the 11th century, a two-bay chancel, and the base of the tower, which date back to the 12th century. The chancel was enlarged and remodeled in the 13th century by the Canons of Shulbrede Priory. In 1684, a belfry and two pillars were added inside the nave. The church was extensively restored in 1856 by Henry Woodyer, who added a north aisle with stone arcading, rebuilt the south porch, and replaced the pinnacled capping of the 18th-century tower with a shingled spire. Further additions include an outer north aisle and north porch by P M Johnston in 1906, as well as a northwest extension and vestry by Robert Pite in 1957.

Constructed from coursed and random Hythe sandstone rubble with tiled roofs, the church features lancet windows. The nave has a roof designed by Woodyer, combining curved brace and king post types, while the tie beam is dated 1654. The chancel includes a 13th-century trefoil-headed piscina. Inside, there is a heavy oak screen, pulpits, and pews, all crafted by Woodyer. The north aisle boasts a five-bay stone arcade, and the extension of the north aisle features two paired wooden octagonal columns from 1906.
