Description
Hill House Cottages and Barn comprise a farmhouse and barn, dated 1723, which have been converted into two cottages and a barn. They are constructed of coursed gritstone rubble with gritstone dressings, and have a stone slate roof. Gable and off-centre ridge stacks are present.
The farmhouse has two storeys and a lobby entrance plan. The south elevation features an off-centre doorcase with a quoined surround and a 19th-century six-panelled door. A datestone above the door is inscribed 'SM 1723'. To the east is a three-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, originally four lights but now with one blocked. Adjacent is a four-light recessed and chamfered mullion window, both with glazing bar sashes. To the west is a recessed and chamfered opening with a modern window. Above are two three-light recessed and chamfered windows with small-paned casements. Above a modern window on the west side is a 19th-century plain sash. On the east gable is a recessed single bay addition. The interior includes stone flagged floors, oak floorboards on the upper level, and chamfered beams.
To the west stands a cruck barn, the front of which was converted into a cottage in the 19th century. The south elevation of the barn has a central door flanked by plain sash windows, with two similar windows above. Behind one of these windows, a single full cruck survives.
