Description

SK29SW BRADFIELD MORTIMER ROAD (east side, off), Bradfield Dale

8/64 Barn approximately 20 metres to north- 21/10/74 east of Hallfield House (formerly listed under GV Hall Lane) II Barn. Probably C17 with C20 alterations. Squared gritstone rubble, sheet asbestos roof. Set into slope giving a tall 2-storey elevation at downhill end. 3½ bays with the ½ bay at uphill end. Opposed cart entrances to uphill bay, one entrance (now part-blocked) with inserted door. Uphill gable has slit vents in chamfered surrounds, pitching door. Rest of barn obscured by adjoining buildings apart from downhill gable now entirely rebuilt with 2 arched entrances to ground-floor garage and boarded door above. Interior: 4 massive cruck pairs. The downhill truss has particularly straight blades that extend into the lower ground-floor garage where they are encased in brickwork. Some wall tie beams and windbraces to single purlins. Collars below diagonal-set ridge on downhill trusses. Crossed apex at uphill end. Secondary trusses support C20 roof. Adjoining buildings not of special interest.
