Description

This barn, located approximately 20 metres northeast of Hallfield House in Bradfield Dale, is likely from the 17th century and has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed from squared gritstone rubble and features a sheet asbestos roof. The building is set into a slope, resulting in a tall two-storey elevation at the downhill end. The barn consists of three and a half bays, with the half bay situated at the uphill end. There are opposed cart entrances to the uphill bay, one of which is now partially blocked and has an inserted door. The uphill gable includes slit vents with chamfered surrounds and a pitching door. The rest of the barn is mostly obscured by adjacent buildings, except for the downhill gable, which has been entirely rebuilt and features two arched entrances leading to a ground-floor garage, along with a boarded door above.

Inside, there are four massive cruck pairs, with the downhill truss having particularly straight blades that extend into the lower ground-floor garage, where they are encased in brickwork. The interior also includes some wall tie beams and windbraces supporting single purlins, with collars positioned below the diagonal-set ridge on the downhill trusses and a crossed apex at the uphill end. The secondary trusses support a 20th-century roof. The adjoining buildings are not of special interest.
