Description

This is a barn located approximately 25 metres to the west of New Hall Farmhouse. It is probably from the early 17th century and has undergone some alterations over time. The barn features a partly cruck-framed structure made of coursed, squared sandstone rubble, and it has a stone slate roof that has been partially replaced with corrugated iron. It is a single-storey building, except for the downhill end bay, which includes a loft and consists of five bays. The corners of the barn are marked by quoins.

On the farmyard side, there is a full-height cart entrance to the right of the centre, with its jambs rebuilt in 20th-century brickwork and no doors present. To the far right, there is a cowhouse door, alongside a blocked doorway to its left. The walling to the left of the cart entrance is made of cruder rubble work, and the left part of the roof has been replaced with corrugated iron. At the rear, the cart entrance is partly blocked with brickwork, and there are other altered openings.

Inside, to the left of the entrance, there is a cruck truss set on padstones, which has massive blades, a tie beam, curved wind-braces, and a collar set below the ridge. To the right, there is a transverse partition wall, beyond which is another similar cruck truss. The upper part of a third truss remains in the downhill end gable. The rear cart entrance is framed by heavy wooden posts and a lintel. The upper end of the building is supported by two king-post trusses. This barn is a rare example in an area that is mainly characterized by post and truss timber-framing. There is a low range of buildings projecting from the front left, but these are not of special interest.
