Description

The northernmost chapel at Wombwell Cemetery, built around 1868 by Thomas Dobb of Rotherham, is currently used as a store. It features thinly-coursed sandstone with contrasting dressings and a Welsh slate roof. The chapel is a single-cell structure with a corner spire, designed in a High Victorian style. Notable architectural elements include polychromatic relieving arches and carved bands. The building has a battered plinth with a chamfered band and a gable entry front that includes a moulded, pointed doorway with colonnettes (all restored) and a circular window above with foiled openings set in a sunken ashlar panel. The ashlar gable copings are adorned with stepped kneelers.

To the right, the spire has a square, buttressed base leading to an octagonal turret featuring slit windows, carved bands, and lucarnes. Each side of the turret has a cusped blind opening beneath grotesques. The tapered spire is topped with more grotesques beneath an ashlar top. At the rear, there is a 4-light window beneath a pierced circular panel. The returns feature two 2-light windows flanked by single lights, with a pierced circular window beneath a central gablet; these windows have been bricked up. The roof is decorated with cut-slate. The architect was mentioned in the Barnsley Chronicle on August 8, 1867, with a cutting available in the Barnsley Local History Library.
