Description

The Southernmost Chapel at Wombwell Cemetery is a mortuary chapel built around 1868 by Thomas Dobb of Rotherham. It is constructed from thinly-coursed sandstone with some contrasting dressings and features a Welsh slate roof. The chapel is a single-cell structure topped with a corner spire and showcases a High Victorian style, characterized by polychromatic relieving arches and carved bands.

The front of the chapel has a gable-entry design, featuring a moulded, pointed doorway with colonnettes and a circular window above that has foiled openings leading to a sunken ashlar panel. The gable is adorned with ashlar copings and stepped kneelers. To the left, the spire has a square, buttressed base that transitions into an octagonal turret with slit windows, carved bands, and lucarnes. Each side of the turret has a cusped blind opening beneath grotesques, and the tapered spire is topped with more grotesques beneath an ashlar top.

At the rear, there is a 4-light window beneath a pierced circular panel. The sides of the chapel feature two 2-light windows flanked by single lights, with a pierced circular window beneath a central gablet. The roof is decorated with cut-slate and has a leaded flèche base at the ridge. The chapel is occasionally used for burial services, although some windows are boarded and in poor repair. The architect is mentioned in the Barnsley Chronicle dated August 8, 1867, with a cutting available in the Barnsley Local History Library.
