Description
Auburn House is a house built in 1734, with some alterations from the early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared gritstone, featuring gritstone dressings and chamfered quoins. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with plain tiles, complemented by stone gable end stacks and stone coped gables that have moulded kneelers. The house has three storeys and three bays.
The central entrance features a flush doorcase with a raised fillet along the edge, a large bracketed moulded stone hood, and a panelled door with a plain overlight. On either side of the entrance are 19th-century canted bay windows, which have 20th-century window fittings and moulded cornices. Above the entrance, there is a central fixed light with glazing bars in a flush surround, flanked by glazing bar sash windows in similar surrounds. The upper level has two smaller sash windows and a central datestone inscribed 'TC GC 1734', which is adorned with a dripmould.
Inside, the sitting room features an original stone fireplace with a moulded surround and mantlepiece, which has been re-used from an upstairs room. The front of the house is enclosed by iron railings that have pointed, pierced finials, along with stone gatepiers topped with pointed features and acorn-type finials.
