Description
The Flying Childers Inn is a house that has been converted into a public house. It was built in the late 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th century, including a large addition. The building is constructed from coursed squared gritstone with gritstone dressings and quoins, topped with a plain tile roof. The roof features stone coped gables with moulded kneelers on the 19th-century section and a stone gable end stack on the west side.
The inn is two storeys high and has an L-plan layout. The west elevation has two bays, while the north elevation has three bays. The western section dates back to the 18th century and includes a blocked 18th-century flush central doorcase. To the south, there is a 2-light flush mullion window, and to the north, a 19th-century flush doorcase with 'WPT' inscribed on the lintel, leading to a glazed panelled door. Above this door are two 2-light flush mullion windows.
The northern section, built in the 19th century, is taller and features an irregular pattern of openings. There is a 20th-century window in a flush quoined doorcase with a lintel inscribed with the initials 'WPT' on the west side. To the east, there is a glazing bar sash in a flush surround, with a small casement window in a flush surround beyond. Further east, there are two flush quoined doorcases, both with lintels inscribed with 'WPT'. The eastern doorcase has a glazed panelled door, while the western one has a glazing bar sash. Beyond these, there is a small casement window with a flush surround. Above, there are three glazing bar sashes in flush surrounds, with a 20th-century window inserted between the eastern sashes. This building is included for its group value only.
