Description
The garden seat and sundial, located in the garden to the south-west of Lomberdale Hall, date back to around 1844 and incorporate medieval fragments. The garden seat, situated to the west, features stone walls made from re-used stones on three sides and is open on the east side, topped with a felted roof. The back wall displays an early 14th-century blind arcade with cusped stone tracery spanning its full width, while the side walls contain various 13th and 14th-century gravestones embedded within them. On the south wall, there is a 19th-century stone plaque inscribed with the words "Time grows young in a garden." To the east, along the path, stands the sundial mounted on a re-used medieval column. Both the garden seat and sundial were erected by Thomas Bateman, the archaeologist who designed and resided at Lomberdale Hall. This structure is included for its group value context.
