Description
The Rookery is a house dating from the late 18th century, likely with an earlier core. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with gritstone dressings and features a stone slate roof. The building has tall stone stacks at the gable end, ridge, and side walls, along with a stone-coped gable that has a moulded kneeler on the west side.
The house is two storeys high with an irregular plan and a five-bay front elevation. On the west side, there is an advanced cross wing that includes a full-height canted bay window. The windows are plain sashes set in plain surrounds on three sides. The lower wing to the east has a blocked central doorcase topped with a bracketed stone hood. There is also a glazing bar sash in a plain surround and another flush doorcase with a bracketed stone hood under a wooden porch. The entrance features an 18th-century glazed and panelled door.
To the east, there is a wide three-light flush mullion window with plain sashes, and above it, a similar window with glazing bar sashes. On the west side, three glazing bar sashes are set in plain surrounds, and there is a stringcourse above the plain sashes with a canted Venetian bay window above that, also with glazing bar sashes. The stringcourse runs from the impost level of the central light. At the rear, there is a two-light, double-transomed stair window.
Inside, the hall floor and stairs are made of Monyash marble, and there are various 18th-century fireplaces.
