Description

The Old Shoulder of Mutton Inn is a house that was formerly an inn, dating from the mid-18th century with later alterations. It is constructed of coursed rubble gritstone and limestone, featuring coped gables and moulded kneelers. The building has an intermediate ridge brick stack and a stack remnant on the north gable, topped with a Welsh slate roof.

The structure is two storeys high and originally consists of four bays, with a later added fifth bay at the south end. The first floor has openings with extended heads that include key blocks and glazing bar sashes, while the ground floor features plain surrounds and 20th-century casements. There is an off-centre doorway with a massive lintel and quoins, leading to 20th-century double half doors that are half glazed.

The south end bay has a matching first floor window above a cart opening, supported by corbels and an oak lintel beam. Blocked 2-light mullioned windows can be seen on the gable ends, visible from the interior, which retains a 18th-century turned baluster staircase, 18th-century panelling in part of a first floor room, an 18th-century hearth on the ground floor, and remnants of an earlier roof, including a curved principal in the single remaining truss.
