Description
Number 1 and Butts Cottage, located on South Church Street in Bakewell, is a group of three houses built in the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed from deeply-coursed sandstone with dressed stone surrounds and feature a slate roof.
The exterior consists of two storeys with a six-window range arranged in a 5:1 configuration facing South Church Street. To the left, there is a five-window range facing Butts View. The broad door surrounds have projecting sills and plain surrounds for the 8/8 sash windows, which are set beneath wedge lintels.
No. 15 on South Church Street has a three-window range with a central six-panel door located beneath a blind window recess. No. 17, to the right, features a two-window range with a 20th-century part-glazed door under a blind window on the left. Both Nos. 15 and 17 share a hipped roof, which has an ashlar stack on the left slope and a rendered stack on the right near the roof valley with No. 19.
No. 19 is likely the earliest of the three and has a gabled frontage with a part-glazed door to the right of an 8/8 sash window, and a central 8/8 sash window above. On the left return, there is a carriage entrance to bay 2, which leads to doorways for Butts Cottage on the left and No. 1, Butts View on the right. Butts Cottage has 2/2 sash windows, while there is a stone-mullioned tripartite window in bay 5; otherwise, the windows are 8/8 sashes like those on the front.
The interior has not been inspected.
