Description
The Great Cross and railed enclosure is a Grade I listed structure located on South Church Street in Bakewell. The cross shaft dates back to the early 9th century and is of Saxon origin, while the surrounding enclosure was added in the early 19th century. It is made of gritstone and features wrought-iron railings.
The small railed enclosure surrounds a deeply-chamfered socket stone that supports a monolithic cross shaft with a panelled head. The shaft is decorated with vine scrolls and bas-relief carvings depicting animals and humans, which are believed to reflect a blend of Christian and pagan beliefs. This cross is thought to have similarities to the cross at Rothwell in Dumfries and Galloway. The railings consist of square rods topped with arrowhead finials, and the standards are adorned with vase finials.
Additionally, the cross is recognized as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, designated as Derbyshire County Number 70.
