Description

Alport Mill is a cornmill that has been converted into a trout farm. It dates from the 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, except for the west wall of the 18th-century section, which is made of coursed squared gritstone, featuring gritstone dressings and quoins. The roof is covered with 20th-century stone slates and includes a louvred drying vent at the ridge of the northern addition.

The original mill is three storeys high, with later additions that include a two-storey section and a single-storey section. The layout is irregular, with the 18th-century mill located to the south, a 19th-century addition at the rear, and two single-storey lean-tos on the west side at different levels. A rim-drive water wheel, measuring 21 feet in diameter and five feet wide, is attached to the east side of the 18th-century section.

On the south elevation, there is one glazing bar sash window in a flush surround on the ground floor. The west elevation features a two-light 18th-century flush mullion window on the ground floor, with a similar window above it and another one above that. The rear elevation has 19th-century windows in the 18th-century section and a quoined doorcase with a loft opening above.

Inside, the mill contains a likely mid-19th-century arrangement of five sets of stones arranged over a long drive shaft, with bevel gearing for each set of stones. There is also a drying kiln in the 19th-century addition. This site has been known as a watermill since the 12th century.
