Description

Pilsley Church of England School is a school building constructed in 1849 by Joseph Paxton, funded by the Duke of Devonshire. It underwent alterations and extensions around 1980. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone and ashlar, topped with a fishscale Westmorland slate roof featuring coped gables and plain kneelers. It has stone and blue brick lateral stacks and is designed in a single storey, T plan, with an additional 20th-century southwest wing that is not of special interest.

The building has a chamfered plinth and flush quoins. The east gable end is stepped and features a 3-light recessed and chamfered mullion window with a returned hoodmould. Above this window is a First World War memorial clock with a moulded stone surround and rectangular hoodmould. Below the window, there are memorial plaques for the First and Second World Wars, also with moulded stone surrounds. A taller gabled wall behind includes a narrow slit window with a returned hoodmould.

The symmetrical south elevation has a tall projecting entrance bay at the center, which includes a large doorway with a chamfered surround and returned hoodmould, a panelled door with an overlight, and a sunk square panel above displaying the date 1849. Atop the gable is a tall square bellcote with an open timber superstructure on a stone base and a concave pyramid roof. Flanking the porch bay are two 5-light recessed and chamfered mullioned windows, along with a pair of similar 20th-century 2-light windows below.
