Description
The lime kiln at the western entrance to Darlton Quarry is an early 19th-century structure made of rubble limestone and timber. It features a large beehive-shaped design, standing approximately 25 feet high and partly built into the hillside. The kiln is circular in plan, with large projecting rubble buttresses on either side of the drawing tunnel entrance. A substantial lintel supports the upper stonework between these buttresses, and set back beneath the lintel is the arched tunnel entrance made of rubble voussoirs. The kiln tapers towards the top, although the west side has collapsed near the top. The interior has been filled with rubble, making the lining not visible. This kiln is noted as a rare survival from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, representing a complex of lime quarrying and burning along Middleton Dale.
