Description

Plague Cottage is a cottage dating from the 18th century, possibly with a 17th-century core. It is constructed from coursed limestone and gritstone rubble, featuring gritstone dressings and quoins on the west side. The roof is made of stone slate and 20th-century concrete tiles, with a stone ridge end stack to the north and a stone-coped gable that has moulded kneelers. This gabled, two-storey cottage has two bays. On the east side, there is a three-light flush mullion window with 20th-century leaded lights, and on the west side, there is an inserted 19th-century doorcase with a plank door. Above the door, there are two two-light flush mullion windows, also with 20th-century leaded lights. Plague Cottage is attached to the east and rear of No 1 Church Avenue and both buildings have a historical association with the Eyam plague of 1666.
