Description
Nos 2 and 3 Church Avenue are a pair of cottages with a core dating back to the 17th century, which were refashioned in the mid-18th century and have undergone later alterations. They are constructed from limestone and gritstone rubble, featuring gritstone dressings and quoins, and have stone slate roofs. The cottages have stone gable end and side wall stacks, with chamfered stone coping and a moulded kneeler on the south pitch of the east gable.
The buildings are arranged in an L-plan, with their main fronts set at right angles. They are two storeys high, with No 3 having two bays and No 2 being a single bay. The northern cottage, No 3, has a recessed and chamfered 3-light mullion window with 18th-century leaded lights on either side. To the west, there is a C20 glazed door inserted, and above it, there is a recessed and chamfered opening with a horizontal sliding sash. To the east, there is a lean-to with a flush doorcase and a plank door.
No 2, to the west, features a flush quoined doorcase with a C20 glazed panelled door to the north. It has a 3-light flush mullion window to the south and a similar 2-light window above. Over the door, there is a bull's eye window set in a moulded aedicule with four raised keystones, and a tiny central casement. The cottages are also of historical interest due to their association with the Eyam Plague of 1666.
