Description

No 1 Church Avenue is a cottage dating from the 18th century, possibly with a core from the 17th century, and has undergone alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone and gritstone rubble, featuring gritstone dressings and quoins. The roof is made of stone slate and 20th-century concrete tiles, with stone gable end stacks and moulded stone copings and kneelers on the southern bay.

This two-storey cottage has an irregular plan, with a two-bay rear section attached to a single-bay southern section at the north-west corner. The east elevation displays two small pane casements in flush surrounds, along with a flush doorcase featuring a plank door to the south. Set back to the north, there are two glazing bar fixed lights in flush surrounds. In the angle between the two sections, there is another doorcase with a plank door. Above to the north, there are two similar windows to those below, but each has a two-pane casement. To the south, there is a glazing bar fixed light with a single pane casement.

Attached to the west is a gabled cottage that includes an inserted doorcase to the west and a three-light flush mullion window to the east with 20th-century leaded lights. Above, there are two two-light flush mullion windows with leaded lights. Both cottages have a historical association with the Eyam Plague of 1666, similar to No 2 Plague Cottage on Church Street.
