Description

Midgeley Gate Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed house dating from the early 17th century, with a south wing of similar age and a mid-19th century north wing. It is constructed of red gritstone squared rubble and features stone chimneys at the junctions of the south, central, and north wings, as well as on the north gable. The building has an irregular plan.

The south wing is two storeys high and consists of one bay, with recessed bevelled mullioned windows; the lower storey has a 5-light window, while the upper storey has a 4-light window that has been converted to a 2-light window on the east side, and a 5-light window with an ovolo-moulded label on the west side. The central cross wing is three storeys plus a cellar, featuring one window on each main storey and two small replaced cellar windows. It has a 5-light recessed mullioned window on the lower and middle storeys, a 3-light window on the upper storey (east), and a 4-light window on the lower storey with a cove-moulded label, along with an altered window on the middle storey that has a label cut back; there is a late 20th-century casement window on the upper storey (west). The north wing contains 4-pane 2-light wood casements.

Inside, the farmhouse features ovolo beams, chamfered beams, and unwrought beams, all made of oak. The walls between the south, central, and north wings are very thick. There are traces of an inglenook fireplace against the north wall of the south wing, and a Jacobean staircase that has been partly rebuilt in the 19th century.
