Description

Smerrill Grange is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, possibly built on a medieval grange site, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed from massive coursed gritstone and features coped gables, end and intermediate ridge stacks, and a stone slated roof, forming an 'L' plan.

The southwest elevation consists of two storeys and attics. The gable at the southeast end displays irregular fenestration, featuring tall two and three-light recessed chamfer mullioned windows on the ground floor, with single light openings on the first floor, all having chamfered surrounds. The attic window has a sash frame with a single glazing bar.

On the northwest range, there is a two-light window on the ground floor and a shallow three-light opening above, both with recessed chamfer mullions and undivided casement frames. The plain doorway includes a plank door with a single light. The southwest elevation has been significantly refashioned, featuring an off-centre doorway with a heavily tooled surround, a shallow flat hood on moulded brackets, and a half-glazed door with margin lights.

Other elevations of the building include two and three-light recessed chamfer mullioned openings, and at the angle of the two ranges, there is a pointed arched opening with a chamfered surround.
