Description
York House is a house located on the north side of High Street in Thornton Dale. It consists of two sections, both likely built in the 17th century, raised in the 19th century, and altered in the 20th century. The structure is cruck-framed and encased in dressed sandstone and coursed sandstone rubble, with tooled quoins on the right side. It has a pantile roof and brick stacks. The house features a 3-cell, hearth-passage plan with a rear service room added. It has two low storeys and a three-window front.
To the left of the center, there is a 20th-century door with glazed lights, flanked by 20th-century five-light casements with glazing bars that bow to the left. There is also a three-light, small-pane horizontal sliding sash window on the right end, while the first floor has large-pane horizontal sliding sash windows. All openings have painted timber lintels, and there are end and center stacks.
Inside, a pair of jointed full crucks with a saddle can be seen in the room to the left, and some studding remains in place between the tie and collar beams. The original thatch is preserved beneath the pantiles.
