Description

No 12 Castlegate is a house located in East Ayton, dating from the late 17th century, with later alterations and an extension. Originally cruck-framed and encased in limestone rubble, the front has been replaced with rendered blocks. The house features a pantile roof and rebuilt brick stacks. It has a 2-cell, end-passage plan with a rear outshut added, and is 1.5 stories tall. The entrance on the left is a 20th-century glazed door, while to the right is a 3-light casement window with glazing bars, and at the far right is a 2-light, small-pane, horizontal sliding sash window. Above the door is a small rectangular fixed light window, and there are two 2-light, small-pane, horizontal sliding sashes to the right. The house has coped gables and a shaped kneeler on the left, with stacks located at the center left and end right.

Inside, one pair of full crucks remains between the two rooms. Timber studding is preserved in the partition wall that divides the ground floor inner room and in the walling between the two upper rooms. The ground floor features chamfered beams throughout, a hearthbeam in the outer room, and a brick firehood in the room above. A 'set-pot' can be found in the passage wall behind the hearth, and there is a spice cupboard with a drawer to the left of the hearth.
