Description

Ayton Bridge is a bridge built in 1775 by John Carr. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features four arches, with the central arches being wider and taller, adorned with voussoirs. The bridge has pilaster buttresses that rise into the parapet, creating embrasures. There is a continuous band beneath the plain parapet, which has cambered coping and ends at each side with cylindrical piers topped with domed caps. For further reference, see the York Georgian Society's publication "The Works in Architecture of John Carr," 1973.
