Description

The Elms is a house from the 18th century that was altered and extended in 1837, as indicated by a datestone, with further changes made in the 20th century. It is built of coursed sandstone and has a concrete slate roof. Originally designed with a central entry plan and 1½ rooms deep, the house was later extended to the left and rear to create a double-pile layout, with a lean-to extension added and raised on the right side.

The building is two stories high and features a five-window front with quoins only on the front side. To the left of the center is a six-panel door with a patterned overlight, topped by a cornice supported by scroll-bracketed panelled pilasters. There are three 16-pane sash windows with stone sills and heavy lintels to the right of the door and one to the left. The first floor has five similar windows. At the rear, there is a radial-glazed staircase window with an archivolt. The gable walls have radial-glazed attic windows with archivolts to illuminate the attic passage. The house has coped gables and shaped kneelers, with chimney stacks at the ends and left of center.

Inside, there is an open string straight staircase featuring a moulded handrail that is wreathed at the foot, along with turned balusters and shaped cheekpieces. The ceilings in the ground and first floor rooms to the left have moulded plaster coving. The lean-to extension on the right, which was partly raised around 1900, was likely used as a trap-shed and has a wide blocked opening on the ground floor.
