Description
Boulby Barns Cottage is a pair of cottages for alum workers, dating from the mid 17th century, raised around 1700 and again in the early 19th century. It has now been converted into one house, with late 20th-century extensions and a porch. The building is constructed of dressed sandstone and features a renewed clay pantile roof with a stone ridge, gable copings, block kneelers, and rebuilt brick stacks. It is two storeys high, originally designed as a single storey, and has four windows.
There are paired central doorways; the left doorway is partly blocked and contains a mid 20th-century casement, while the right doorway is in a gabled porch with a boarded door and a carved human mask in the gable. The left side has renewed horizontal sashes with glazing bars, while the right side retains mid 20th-century casements in the original openings. There are also two small blocked windows between the floors. The building features late 20th-century moulded eaves corbels and has extensions on both the left and right that are in keeping with the original design, with the right extension still under construction at the time of the survey. The right-hand part of the house retains beamed ceilings, while the lean-to rear outshut is not of interest.
