Description

Numbers 1 and 2 Corner Cottage are a late 18th-century house and attached cottage, modernised in the 20th century. The construction is of dressed sandstone with a pantile roof and rebuilt brick stacks. The two-storey, three-window front has a gable end facing the street. The property features left- and right-of-centre doors, each consisting of six sunk panels, set beneath gabled trellis porches. Windows throughout are two-light, small-pane horizontal-sliding sashes with painted stone sills, and the ground-floor windows have painted wedge lintels. Coped gables and shaped kneelers are present, along with end and right-of-centre stacks. At the rear is a single-storey, continuous outshut with a catslide roof. Inside Number 1, the room to the right of the ground floor has a partly-altered stone fireplace with a corbelled-out mantelshelf; a cupboard door with butterfly hinges is located to the right of the fireplace. The room to the left of the ground floor contains a pair of plank cupboard doors, also on butterfly hinges. Beaded joists are visible throughout the ground floor. The buildings have group value, contributing to the character of the area.
