Description
Cruck Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century, with later alterations and an extension. It features a cruck frame encased in coursed rubble limestone, spray-rendered, topped with a pantile roof and brick stacks. The building has a two-cell, gable-entry plan and has been extended at the rear into former outbuildings. It stands two storeys tall and has two windows. The entrance is located in the gable wall to the right, and the windows are 2-light, 12-pane horizontal-sliding sashes with timber lintels. The gables are coped with kneelers, and there are end stacks. The right gable end has a renewed board door. At the rear, there is a single-storey outshut with a catslide roof.
Inside, there is an inglenook fireplace with a hearthbeam and heck, and a stone chimney-piece with a corbelled segmental lintel. The Wrelton range, dated 1869, is in working order and is flanked by a salt box on the left and a spice cupboard with a panelled door on the right. A cross beam with some studding remains in place, along with a chamfer-stopped spine beam and chamfered joists. On the first floor, a single full cruck truss is visible at the saddle apex, and a studded partition separates the rooms.
