Description

Keeper's Cottage and Hill House is a house that has now been divided into two units. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and was extended in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone, with the older left section featuring herringbone tooling and the right section having random tooling. The roof is pantiled, with some parts recently renewed.

The house has two storeys and consists of six bays. The left section has a rebated doorway, which may have originally been a barn door, and small modern casement windows above it. The main four-bay house is made up of two parts: the 18th-century section has been raised and re-windowed to match the early 19th-century extension. There is a boarded door with a blocked fanlight in the third bay, and heavy lintels with projecting cills support late 20th-century small-paned casements in the older openings. The building features a plain plinth, a roof with a stone ridge, copings, and curved kneelers, as well as corniced stacks at the ends and junctions.

Inside, the 18th-century part contains a complete early cottage fireplace, which includes an oven, boiler, racks, pulleys, and a large cauldron. The later section features a good open-well staircase with a ramped handrail, turned newels, square balusters, and carved tread ends. There are also six-panel doors, one marble chimney-piece, and two iron basket grates. The building was empty and undergoing restoration at the time of the survey.
