9/123 Keeper's Cottage and Hill House

GV II

House, now being divided into 2 units. Early-mid C18, extended early C19. Coursed squared sandstone, the older left part with herringbone tooling, the right random tooled. Pantiled roof, partly renewed. 2 storeys, 6 bays. Rebated doorway in 2-bay left section (possibly once a barn door) and small modern casements above. Main 4-bay house is of 2 builds, the C18 part raised and re-windowed to unify it with the early C19 extension. Boarded door with blocked fanlight in third bay. Heavy lintels and projecting cills to late C20 small-paned casements in old openings. Plain plinth. Roof has stone ridge, copings and curved kneelers; corniced stacks at ends and junctions.

Interior: C18 part has complete early cottage fireplace, with oven, boiler, racks and pulleys and a great cauldron. Later part has good open-well staircase with ramped handrail, turned newels, square balusters and carved tread ends. 6-panel doors, 1 marble chimney- piece and 2 iron basket grates. Empty and being restored at time of survey.
