Description

Keeper's Cottage is a house that was originally a keeper's cottage, dating from the late 16th century. It features a smoke bay design with a rear outshut that has been later built up to create a lower two-storey rear wing. The main and front wing has a timber-framed first floor, with infill that is partly made of plastered wattle and daub and partly of brick. The later tile-hanging has been removed. The ground floor is constructed of brick and stone, with brick quoins. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with plain clay tiles, featuring a gablet on the north side and a brick stack on the south gable above a late 17th-century internal brick chimney breast. The building has two storeys, with square panels of timber framing and straight braces. The east elevation includes a central doorway with brick dressings, flanked by windows also with brick dressings. There are three windows on the upper floor, along with traces of a mullioned window at the northeast corner. Inside, there is an exposed panel of timber framing, and the ground floor hearth room contains a brick inglenook fireplace with a salt shelf. The interior also features exposed beams and stop-chamfered joists, with smoke blackening in the former smoke bay. The roof structure includes side purlins and queen struts with windbraces, and there are carpenter's marks on the rafters.
