Description
Shepherds Cottage is a former cottage and barn, dated 1795, with the initials W and MD on a door lintel, although the barn may be older. The building is constructed from coursed, tooled sandstone and features a pantiled roof. It consists of three sections: a one-storey, one-bay cottage on the left and a two-storey barn with five irregular bays. The cottage has a Dutch door beneath the dated lintel and a three-light chamfered mullioned window to the left, although one light is blocked and one mullion has been removed. There is a corniced stack at the left end. The main range of the barn has four Dutch doors, one of which is under a lintel dated 1777. On the upper floor, there is one loading door, one blacksmith's window, and four slit vents located under the eaves. The right bay of the barn is canted back, and it features stepped eaves and stone gable copings on square kneelers.
Inside, there is a stout upper cruck truss that is halved at the apex.
